Kehinde He is an American contemporary artist who refers back to the conventional art of early sculptors to invoke perception in the audience. The 259.1 × 762 cm painting is based upon the 1847 work of French artists Auguste Clesinger. It presents a young Black man who lies in a similar position as the woman in Clesinger’s sculpture. The art offers a contemporary view since the man is wearing a red cap, hoodies, and belt on his trousers. Compared to the 17^th-century sculpture by Clesigner, Wiley retains the elements of twisted legs, longer arms, and torso. He replaces the woman’s head and closed eyes with a black man’s twisted heard with staring and gazing eyes. Perception Perception in art embraces visual stimuli and how the viewer understands them. The art elicits my perception of gender identity and fluidity and how traditional and contemporary society views Black men in a white-dominant world. Since Wiley uses a Black man in his art, it poses the ideology that the subjection of women as objectified features in society can also be compared to Black men since the two aspects are equal in terms of indecency, exposure, and vulnerability.
