The decline in Family Meals in the U.S. Modern Family
Before, family meals act as a staple between family members’ relationships. Through eating together, the family members can share their experiences within the day or week. In turn, this strengthens the bond between them because a connection forms when an individual relates oneself with the other. However, recently, the events of family meals have been declining, especially in the Western Countries, particularly in the United States. It appears that this is a multifactorial circumstance that may or may not need to be addressed (Fischler, 2011).
Factors in the Society that Impacted the Shared Meal Time
Generally, the association of food and eating reflects the role of commensality. This role is evident across cultures, especially in Western countries. However, it is gradually being underestimated in modern times. The primary culprit is materialism, which is mostly influenced by individualism (Fischler, 2011).
Materialism and individualism damage any person's overall well-being because it may harm the psychosocial factors like social support and personal control. These two factors force individuals to conform to modern society's needs, where solitude is equated to privacy, and loneliness is normalized as a form of independence. (Fischler, 2011).
Other factors that affect shared mealtime include individualization of the medicalization of food. In a shared meal, the family members cannot choose which they can and cannot eat because they will have the same food.
