Functionalist view of social stratification.
Functionalists believe that every aspect of a society exists for a particular purpose. Theorists such as Kinsley Davis and Wilbert Moore argued that some positions are more important than others. Thus, hierarchical categorization provides great rewards for a society as the inequalities making up each level contribute to the success of the entire society. Moreover, having a categorized society means that individuals have to work hard to fit in various positions thus, reap the rewards of each position (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2013, p. 160).
Conflict theory's view of social stratification
Conflict theorists observe the concept of social stratification as the taking advantage of some people by others. According to theorist Karl Marx, capitalism nature drives a society by dividing individuals as either owners or workers (Chambliss & Eglitis, 2013, p. 162). He further asserts that the owners provide workers the means and benefits enough for their survival but utilizes exploitation and oppression to control them.
