Lesson 2 Intro - Planning and Executing Joint Air Operations
Planning joint air and space operations is a complex undertaking involving many processes and detailed integration with other services, components, agencies, and allied/coalition partners. At the air component level, this planning starts with strategic guidance and the JFC's objectives. This begins the Joint Planning Process for Air (JPPA) which articulates the air strategy through the Joint Air Operations Plan (JAOP). The Joint Air Tasking Cycle (JATC) then translates the operational-level guidance and objectives into the tactical tasks performed in the daily Air Tasking Order (ATO).

Joint Air Operations
The JATC process involves several steps to support the JFACC mission (Williams, 2011) effectively. One of these steps is developing an air-tasking order (ATO), a document outlining air operations for a specific period, typically 24 hours (Army et al., 2019). It includes information on the target sets, assigned air assets, and special instructions or restrictions. It generates an air battle plan (ABP) which incorporates the ATO communication and additional products, such as targeting suspense, sociable order of battle updates, AIRSUPREQs, etc. (Army et al., 2019). Synchronizing a combined air campaign with the JFC's CONOPS and backing other components' operations requires a steady flow of information. The synchronized campaign can only be achieved by adhering to a battle rhythm.
