Military members' children normally make significant sacrifices consistently. These children have less time to develop authentic connections with their parents due to extended working hours and lengthy deployments. Parents' deployment in the military marks a major life event that may have significant impacts on children. Although some perceive it as an event that builds character and resilience, others contend it results in negative emotional and psychological outcomes (Briggs et al., 2019). This discussion post discusses the impact of deployment on children, reiterating the need for parents to talk to children about their deployment and establish mechanisms to obtain support and build resilience.
Deployment can be a source of resilience to children, considering that military children gradually develop robust adaptability and coping skills due to exposure to difficult situations. In the biblical context, resilience is a fundamental virtue the Bible stresses throughout. Trials result in perseverance, leading to completeness and maturity (English Standard Version Bible, n.d., Jam. 1:2-4). From such a viewpoint, deployment may significantly imply character development. Also, deployment can be perceived as a causative factor of trauma for children. Children with military-deployed parents experience an increased risk of behavioral problems, anxiety, and depression. Such adverse outcomes are clearly illustrated in the belief that God is near to those brokenhearted (English Standard Version Bible, n.d., Psa. 34:18). The emotional breakdown of children after deployment of parents is a serious issue, and it challenges the idea of deployment as character development event. Although it is a difficult moment for the child, deployment offers an opportunity for them to develop a sense of maturity because God has plans to empower the heartbroken.
