Module 12 - The Costs of Education in the 21st Century

In the tables below, you will examine the costs of traditional education versus non-traditional education. All throughout this lesson, we have looked at the economic costs associated with the important decision to pursue a collegiate education. In this activity, we want to make the costs apparent in stark terms. Simply saying something is costly is one thing, but seeing numbers on the screen will help put those numbers in perspective.
1. Fill out the tables to calculate the “Traditional Education Expenses”. For this, please click here to go to the Penn State World Campus tuition page. Here you will find the financial fees for Penn State students.  Once you have filled out the information for the tuition and fees, move on to living expenses. For this section, please use financial data local to your current location. Since I live in Washington D.C, use the average rent prices for D.C to do the calculations. (Please note: I’m not asking for personal financial information. When discussing living expenses in the D.C area, simply research average prices, and/or find rate examples from major companies that service D.C area.)
2. Then fill out the table “Non-traditional Education Expenses”. For this purpose find five online resources that are commonly used for educational information. The resources must be interactive, with audio and video a minimum. Simple text or picture websites are not sufficient for this assignment. Provide links to the resources you find on your own. Please link them to the title of the resource in the far-left column. You can do this by highlighting the name of the resource, going to insert at the top of the window, then clicking on the link. Also, be sure to provide a description of the resource and a justification for its inclusion in this assignment.
3. Consider the following questions for reflection:
a. Do you think traditional education still is worth the monetary expense?
b. Do you think non-traditional education has replaced traditional institutions for at least some people?
c. Do you think there is a place for both in the education landscape?
4. Please carefully examine the data you have gathered and the reflection questions from the previous point. Write a summary response addressing the following questions: What is the difference between the money spent on traditional versus non-traditional education? Is that difference justified? What does this activity, and the lesson as a whole, tell you about the current and future state of education?
