HOUSING AND PLACED BASED HEALTH DISPARITIES
1 What do you think was the key message?
The video is about the survival and destruction of one community in New York City. In 1949, President Harry Truman enforced the Housing Act, which gave the federal, state and local governments the authority to change residential life. One of the housing initiatives that was enacted was urban renewal. The government's main goal was to transform the neighborhood into a planned city. This initiative by the government displaced more than 300,000 families from their homes. However, the most interesting it about it is that half of the victims were black. According to President Harry, the slum led to the transmission of diseases among the black community, while the urban renewal initiative was meant to promote good health (LaVeist, Pollack, Thorpe Jr, Fesahazion & Gaskin, 2011). It is important to note that poor health is common in places that are segregated from opportunities, just like West 99th and 98th Streets in New York City. Initially, this was a slum with a high disease prevalence. From the video, the houses were congested, and the population was...
