Abstract
The act of self-mutilation that includes overdosing and self-cutting have been conducted for various reasons, with the most common rationale being to relieve tension and a bottled-up anger so that one could feel in control of a life situation or punish individuals for combating conflicts with the feelings of deadness and numbness. Regrettably, little work has been done concerning self-mutilation, especially regarding the youths. Further, the research has established the problem to be touching the young generation more, compared to adults and the kids. Hence, the paper seeks to conduct a research on self-mutilation as an avenue of coping with discomfort among the youth. It focuses on the causes of self-abuse, its impacts on society and how it can be managed. Thereby, demonstrating how the act affects the youths and possible approaches to solving the problem or evading the menace.
Self-Mutilation for Coping among the Youths
The developmental agenda for the youths throws attention to modes of helping the young generation prosper. However, these approaches are faced with the challenge of self-mutilation also termed as cutting or self-injury. Self-mutilation is a compartment in which an individual deliberately harms himself or herself. This factor is mostly associated with expressions of malady and discomfort. The element of self-injury as an avenue for coping among the youths has resulted in several controversial issues within the field of psychology. The act of self-mutilation that includes overdosing and self-cutting have been conducted for various reasons. The most common rationale being to relieve tension and a bottled-up anger so that one could feel in control of a life situation or punish individuals for combating conflicting with the feelings of deadness and numbness (Mental Health America, 2016). This paper seeks to conduct a research on self-mutilation as an avenue of copying with life.
Causes of Self-Mutilation
Early studies on self-mutilation demonstrated it as a precursor to suicide (Purington and Whitlock, 2004). However, further research into the underlying drive to self-mutilation discloses a discrepancy between persons bidding a suicide and individuals who mutilate their bodies as a way of relieving their feelings or coping with uneasiness (Swadi, 2014). Henceforth, most of the researchers have established the act as a mean of dodging suicide (Purington and Whitlock, 2004). Regrettably, little work has been done concerning self-mutilation, especially regarding the youths (Swadi, 2014). Purington and Whitlock in their study on self-injury demonstrate the act to be a way of managing unbearable feelings caused by emotional numbness, worry, and gloom. Reasons of these extreme moods can be sexual abuse, and relationship conflicts, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or TBI. PTSD and TBI are psychiatric problems or disorders that result in individuals going through trauma (Mental Health America, 2016). The people might do self-injure to express their emotional state, to cleanse their bodies, to reenact a suffering as an approach to solving it, to transfer their wants or to gain control of themselves (DiLazzero, 2...
