Summary and Overall Impressions
The study is titled Effects of Environmental Health on Low-Income vs. High-Income Countries and was written by Morgan Tseng. It focuses on the unique factors and difficulties that low-income countries, compared to high-income countries, face when addressing environmental health issues. The author argues that people have less incentive to invest in cleaner environmental policies in low-income countries because they worry more about meeting basic consumption needs. Further, this population must face high marginal costs due to weaker political infrastructure and the high possibility for social partners to fail to capture environmental benefits. The fourth fundamental problem in these countries is market failures.
Thus, the biggest issue in developing countries is the problems of insufficient conversion and consumption of energy, limited access to clean water, and poor hygiene standards or levels. In contrast, developed countries face the central problem of pollution as issues like hygiene and access to water have been mainly addressed. In addition to these arguments, the author also acknowledges that lack of funds and issues like corruption inhibit developments in environmental health in low-income countries compared to high-income countries.
The paper's strengths lie in the extensive use of resources and critical commentary on these resources while providing a clear and precise comparison between the sets of countries. To this end, however, the paper appears to be a narration since there are no sources that speak otherwise on the already stated sources. This forms the paper's first weakness.
