Pollution is a significant problem the world is currently facing. The use of non-biodegradable materials like plastic bags makes it challenging to address the environmental pollution menace. According to an article published in Ethical Choice, Chang (2020), the cumulative production of synthetic fibre, polymers, and additives was 8300 million tons, where 4600 million tons were discarded into the land. These statistics show the impact of the contribution of plastic materials to environmental pollution. This means that the best remedy to pollution is to stop or minimize using plastic materials, especially single-use plastics like plastic bags, plastic straws, plastic food, and surgical gloves. Most of these are often used once, after which they are disposed off. The best action to address environmental pollution through non-biodegradable plastic bags is to opt for reusable options, recycle plastic bags, big brands being part of the solution, and create public awareness about the effect of non-biodegradable materials on the environment.
People should source reusable bags in place of plastic bags. Adopting reusable products is good for the environment and people. They include cotton and non-woven polypropylene bags, stainless steel containers, cups, and tableware. These products are biodegradable and often decompose if discarded into the environment after some time. However, a 2021 UNEP article about reducing the impact of single-use plastic products argues that these reusable products are environmentally friendly and user-friendly because they reduce people's spending on bags. They can be conveniently carried to the market or shop because they are foldable and descent apart from being reusable.
