Applying Course Concepts: Ethical Concerns and Practical Application

Coursework Instructions:

Applying Course Concepts
Citing the required course readings for this week and at least 1 additional, peer-reviewed source (in addition to the Bible), address the following concepts:
Ethical Concerns:
* What are some general ethical concerns that must be considered when conducting research?
* What does Scripture say specifically about the Christians' responsibility to act ethically toward his fellow man?
Practical Application:
* Research a current newspaper or popular-press magazine article that cites some sort of data. Explain how data support the message of the article. Would the article seem less authoritative without the data? Were the analyses descriptive or inferential? Provide a link to the article you discuss.
* Discuss why statistics is important to public policy.
* Based on the requirements laid out in O'Sullivan et al. Chapter 1, develop a research question in some area of public policy that interests you. Explain why your question meets the two criteria for a good research question.
Research Topic
Review the list of possible research questions found in the Resources section.
List, in order of preference, your top three research question choices from the list (do not simply list numbers -- write out the questions).
You will be assigned 1 of the 3 selected questions.  The assigned question will then be used in Discussion: Research Paper Development and People Research, Research Paper: Annotated Bibliography Assignment, and the Research Paper: Final Paper Assignment.

Ethical Concerns
Researchers must be careful to avoid bias in their study design, data collection, and analysis. Bias can arise from several sources, such as the way questions are worded, the types of participants selected, or the way results are interpreted. Likewise, researchers must respect the rights and welfare of study participants. This means obtaining informed consent, protecting participant confidentiality, and minimizing any potential harm or discomfort. Additionally, researchers should be transparent about their methods and findings and should make their data available for other researchers to examine and replicate.
Scripture calls Christians to act ethically towards their fellow man in many ways. For example, the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12) instructs them to treat others as they would want to be treated. Additionally, Colossians 3:12-13 calls on people to be kind, humble and forgiving towards one another. These principles would suggest that individuals should aim to conduct research in a way that is respectful and fair to participants.
Practical Application
The article "Inside America's obesity epidemic: How America's weight (and weight loss) aren't so simple" uses data to demonstrate the severity of the obesity epidemic in the United States. The article reports on the high levels of obesity rates in America, the ratio of Americans that fit in the medical definition of obesity and are at risk of serious related problems such as diabetes and hypertension, and the percentage increase in deaths with regards to excess weight (Weintraub, 2022). These data help to support the article's message that obesity is not a personal failing and additional weight intensifies dangers in over a long time. Without the data, the article would not be as authoritative. The analyses in this article are descriptive, as they are summarizing ke...
