Purpose of Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (NABs)

Coursework Instructions:

You are a clinical neuropsychologist, and a patient has come to see you. The patient explained that she was in a minor car accident a few months back, was examined at the hospital, and appeared to be healthy with no injuries. Since that time, she has self-reported multiple issues, including short-term memory loss, lack of motivation at work, difficulty with remaining focused on tasks, and an inability to perform work-related tasks that she normally performs.

Neuropsychological assessment battery (NABs)

Purpose of neuropsychological batteries chosen:
The neuropsychological assessment battery can examine multiple brain regions at the same time to identify where the lesion is located. It is distinct in that it allows for multimodal examination of the client and provides a comprehensive assessment hence, a basis for treatment. It is important to assess a patient who you think suffered a mild traumatic brain injury as the domain is often missed in favor of concomitant injuries such as fractures and lacerations that are more obvious (Baruch et al., 2016). Accurate assessment and diagnoses are key in reducing morbidity associated with concussive injuries and allow for the quick and safe return of individuals to participate in activities of daily living. The use of NAB in this patient would be to classify the extent to which she suffered a traumatic brain injury based on the score on the test.
Cognitive domains:
According to Gregory R. J. (2004), the neuropsychological assessment battery (NAB) focuses on the cognitive domains involved in attention, language, memory (visual and verbal), visual-spatial reasoning, and executive functioning. Some of the symptoms exhibited by the client fall under these categories, with the main highlights being memory deficiencies and concentration impediments. It is important to get the full score of the test to cover other symptoms that may be masked by the dominant ones and easily qualify the client in a certain category.
