Children relate an image to a word and images are a good way to enhance language development and language is one aspect of children’s cognitive development. The book would focus on children aged 4-6 years where they can recognize the sounds and words. Stories that stimulate language development are common in children’s books but the choice of my book is to show different scenes that are common in children’s daily life. In the first pages, an image is linked to a word, and as the children progress, there are simple sentences with images that have already been mentioned before in the book. There are simple illustrations and they are also introduced to the simple geometric shapes. The children will learn and become familiar with the images, which increases their vocabulary level.
Children often prefer stories with images and even those without texts, and in the presence of an adult, the children can assess the children’s reaction to the images. This is useful as the adults can observe how the children verbalize what they see with and without the adult’s help. For instance, questions or comments about the images when reading a story aloud can help indicate whether the children can read and understand the images. Thus, where possible interaction with the children and dialogue can motivate them to learn more, and this is the case when there is joint attention to the book and dialogue. Encouraging the children to repeat words or phrases for specific images helps in retention and enriching the child's language where they learn more words.
