Inclusivity in Disney Movie Shrek
HW Assignment 2: I have posted links to 9 different movie clips from “Shrek” on Blackboard. Watch at least three of the posted clips. Then, in a well-crafted essay, incorporate all the following terms (in no particular order and defining each concept in your own words), describing one or more instances in the movie clips you watched that exemplify each of the concepts listed below. Discrimination is the unfair or unjust treatment of others owing to their different or unique set of characteristics. A good example of discrimination is when one is treated unjustly due to race or religion. In the Shrek, killing the ogre scene exemplifies the concept of discrimination. Here lord Farquaad discriminates against the ogre due to his association with the donkey and consequently orders his execution. Prejudice refers to having a distorted preconceived view of others. Here one makes a conclusion concerning another party without referencing any facts. In most cases, a person consults their emotions or feelings when making a prejudicial determination. The scene of the merry men exemplifies prejudice. The merry men underestimated the princess and concluded that she would not be able to escape from their hands (Movieclips, 2022). However, the princess flattens the threat and saves herself.
Stigmatization is closely related to discrimination. However, in stigmatization, the discriminator regards the other party as deserving immense disapproval. Stigmatization may be based on the inherent traits or behaviors of the party being discriminated against. The killing of the ogre scene exemplifies the concept of stigmatization. Lord Farquaad expresses such great disapproval of the donkey because he considers it ugly. Stereotyping refers to concluding that a person/ party must have the characteristics widely thought to belong to the group/ community from which they hail.
