Create a structural analysis/outline of Chapter 2 of Philippians, using chapter and verse designations to identify the various paragraphs, and write a brief statement about the paragraph’s contents.
Include the entire chapter in this analysis.
As you think about the literary structure of the paragraph, can you suggest a reason or two as to why Paul would place 2:5-11 in the position he did, after Paragraph I and before Paragraph and the subsequent paragraphs. Does this help you see the role he thinks this paragraph plays in Philippians, and perhaps his entire kingdom outlook?
Every paragraph – not only in the Bible, but in any literature – has a dominant theme. The dominant theme can be expressed in a simple, concise, declarative sentence. (Review the Week 4 PP presentation and the “Four Levels of Meaning” PP. (link attached) The dominant theme and meaning as referent are the same idea.

A Structural Analysis of Philippians 2
In Chapter 2 of Philippians, Paul (16ce) encourages the Philippians to emulate his teachings and follow in the path of Christ, as we will see in this structurally broken-down analysis of the paragraph. In Philippians 2:1 – Paul gives an illustration of Christ’s nature. His Love, Humility, Compassion, and Kindness. Philippians 2:2-4 – Paul urges his church to follow and adhere to the teachings of Christ, accept Him, and follow Him. He encourages the Philippians to embody Christ’s nature in the sense of togetherness and love. In these verses, Paul asks his church to have one another's interests at heart and not be selfish. Philippians 2:5 – Paul introduces a way to look unto Christ for His humble nature. Philippians 2:6-8 – Paul poetically expresses Christ’s humility, His down-to-earth nature, and His obedience. Philippians 2:9-11 – Paul shows the honour accorded to Jesus Christ due to His humility. All knees will bow at the mention of His name because God raised His name to a level more significant than any other, and all will accept Jesus Christ as our Lord to the magnificence of our God the Father.
Philippians 2:12-13 – Paul acknowledges his church has faithfully followed him and urges them to stay faithful. He emphasizes that his church should stay obedient to God, for He works within them to deliver them to their salvation. Philippians 2:14-18 – Paul urges his church to be happy in all they do, and they should not complain because by so doing, they will be pure at heart, and they will stand out in a world full of corrupted people. The purest of souls will shine and light up the world around them, and from this, Paul will be happy, for his efforts will not have been in vain. Paul then encourages his church to rejoice in the Lord with him, and their endeavours will not go to waste. Philippians 2:19-24 – Paul shows his faith in Timothy and asks his church to embrace him, for he brings good news from their apostle. Paul insists they should accept Timothy because of his faithfulness and selflessness. He has good intentions for both Paul and the Philippians. Philippians 2:25-30 – Paul also shows his faith in Epaphroditus, referring to him as his brother who has been with him throughout his journey. Paul requests his church to embrace Epaphroditus with happiness because he is also a staunch believer of God, emphasizing that he had almost lost his life for his work for Jesus Christ.
