The book is a collection of magic formulas, spells, and eulogy scripts placed in ancient graves and tombs to help the deceased in the afterlife and pursuit of immortality (The British Museum, 2022).
2 Who was Sir Budge, what was his profession and employer and why is he considered controversial among Egyptologists?
Sir Ernest Budge worked at a United Kingdom’s Museum and studied and published ancient Egypt as an orientalist and Egyptologist. Budge is controversial as he used unorthodox means to acquire antiquities in Egypt. He also used deception in his studies and his works relied heavily on his religious beliefs and culture which was not in touch with ancient Egypt and other Egyptologist.
3 Who was Ani and what was his profession?
Ani is considered an Egyptian official and supervisor of the divine offerings and granary of Lord Tawer.
4 Why possessing a book of the dead was so important to the ancient Egyptians?
The book was important in protecting the dead in the afterlife. If not protected, they would perish in demise.
5 In your opinion, was the removal of the book of the dead of Ani from Egypt an act of “thievery” at the time? Explain
Budge’s removal of the papyrus of Ani was thievery as it did not respect the cultural Egyptian values behind the significance of the book on protection of Ani and the dead.
6 How do you think the book of the dead of Ani would have been treated if the events you see in the video had happened today? It would have led to a political upheaval with modern activist and government fighting for the protection and conservancy of their culture and beliefs.
7 Choose one scene of the papyrus (from reference 2) and look at it carefully. What pigments would you expect to find in such papyrus?
