Psychoactive drugs are substances which when taken alter the functions of the nervous system thus causing changes in mood, perception and cognition. They come in the form of medical and recreational drugs. This essay purposes to reflect on the uses, impacts and the cultural perception surrounding psychoactive drugs.
People use drugs for various reasons. They are divided into five groups: The first group is anxyiolitic. People use this to reduce anxiety. The second group is empathogen. These drugs provide emotional experiences such as sympathy and empathy. The third group is stimulant. These drugs invigorate the mind without affecting one’s thinking. The fourth group is depressants. These drugs are taken to reduce stimulation. They include alcohol and cannabis. Last but not least, hallucinogens are taken to alter one’s thinking. They include LSD and Nitrous Oxide. Psychoactive drugs are often maladaptive (apa.org, 2020). A maladaptive substance is one which does not help one adjust to a certain environment. In this case, the use of drugs helps people to avoid new situations. The drugs affect the brain by interfering with the operation of neuro transmitters. Persistent use of drugs can lead to long term or short term memory loss. Other effects include; hallucination, paranoia, aggression and anxiety. People who use drugs tend to be less inclined to experience feelings like anger, pain and sorrow (apa.org, 2020).
