Rhetorical Analysis
In the article titled ‘Love and other drugs,’ Brian D. Earp insinuates that drugs could be used to fix problems in marriages. The author refers to these chemical drugs as ‘Love drugs’ and presumes that issues such as unfaithfulness can be resolved from their root cause (Earp). Earp gives a philosophical approach in this text as he shares his sentiments on fragile marriages. The author feels that if his ideas are implemented, then couples can control the behaviours that lead to disagreement hence the divorce. In his argument, he suggests that married partners should have the free will to use drugs provided they do not harm anyone. Furthermore, the author uses the questioning approach to find solutions to his thesis. Earp draws a conclusion that if couples use drugs to correct their marital issues, then the number of divorce cases will drop. The author considers values, human nature, and the environment as the key factors leading to fragile relationships. Moreover, the author seems to vouch for good morals in society but implies that unfaithfulness is beyond an individual’s control.
Presently, many societies face the challenges of divorce and domestic violence. The text attributes the cause of most divorce cases to unfaithfulness. The author tries to address the issue of infidelity by sharing his opinions on how to mitigate these cases. In the text, the author attempts to address several methods of tackling unfaithfulness in modern society. Earp gives an illustrative story of a thirty-five-year-old woman called Natasha Nelson, who faces the consequences of adultery (Earp). He suggests some methods that would instead be considered cruel and intimidating. Strategies that would involve violating the rights of people in marriages would not work in this democratic world. However, the philosopher shares the idea of the use of chemicals in controlling hormones, which could work. The issue of unfaithfulness in the modern world is considered a source of happiness for others (Lawson and Colin 144). Most partners who are unfaithful to each other claim to lack happiness in their marriages. Therefore, it could be challenging to eradicate unfaithfulness by denying couples their rights.
The text addresses issues of matrimony and the sadness that surrounds these issues. The author’s purpose was to share his opinion on more scientific remedies to unfaithfulness in marriages. However, the article goes a long way to educate couples on the effects of extramarital relationships. The author’s purpose reflects clearly in the format of his writing. Earp addresses issues in society today and puts them in a context to identify the likely cause of marital problems. Moreover, he highlights questions and gives answers based on his own opinions. Furthermore, he lists the factors and offers illustrations to emphasize on every idea. This format helps to develop a clear understanding of his concept of marriages. The use of an illustrative story is significant in depicting the plight of those with unfaithful partners. Earp hardly talks about the plight of victims of adultery, but his approach establishes the sentimental relevance of the t...
