A continuous increase in organisms that resist drugs is seriously threatening the control of infectious diseases. Drug resistance takes place in different ways and times. First, drug resistance happens when there is cell division. When cells multiply continuously, it becomes hard for drugs to perform their functions effectively (Houri, Hamidreza, et al 24). For instance, treating cancer is very tricky because cancerous cells multiply rapidly.
Horizontal gene transfer is a term used where single-celled organisms share resistance. Direct exchange of genes happens in a biofilm state. It is an asexual state meaning the cells do not multiply but acquire genes responsible for resistance. It occurs in fungi, and it is called parasexuality. Horizontal gene transfer exists mainly in microorganisms like bacteria.
