Direct-to-consumer is very important because it assist patients to come up with better discussions on the best methods of treatment available in the hospitals. Pharmacists are examples of healthcare providers who face various ethical issues in terms of cooperation with other healthcare providers, pharmaceutical care and treatment of patients. Advertising of prescription drugs and pharmacy practices are vulnerable to different ethical challenges. These practices require special codes of conduct. When it comes of direct-to- consumer advertising of prescriptions, residents of California have benefited a lot from this nursing practice. People have benefited a lot in terms of justice, autonomy, non-maleficence and beneficence. For example, direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs has assisted patients have more awareness on certain drugs and methods of treatment.
According to Goldacre (2013), approximately 80% of the patients understands the disease the advertised drugs treats. DTC ads have assisted patients to understand that it is very important for them to consult doctors on appropriate drugs and treatment. Professional code of ethics ensure that pharmacists have respect for human dignity, justice non-maleficence, beneficence, and autonomy.
Despite the fact that patients can get more information on medication and disease from the healthcare providers, these patients are also supposed to acquire more information on the best medications available and other drug-related issues. In my community, DTC ads have given patients an opportunity to consult doctors. As a result, patients have been able to receive better treatment at lower costs. Additionally, the rights, desire, privacy, and expectations regarding the treatment and medication of the patients have also been put into considerations.
