Joint Functions in Military Operations
Question A
Intelligence is one of the joint functions of JP 3-0 that has been heavily utilized in military operations since 1990. Although the U.S military used joint intelligence centers (JICs) during the Second World War, it was not until the Gulf War in 1991 that the project was fully adopted. Intelligence has a wide range of applicability in joint operations. First, it is used in planning and developing theatre tactics, techniques, and procedures, and identification of the right communication requirements and personnel during operations (Joint Publication 3-0, 2011). Second, intelligence is used in collection of information to infiltrate enemy communication to gain military advantage over them. Third, intelligence is used in monitoring and coordinating operations to ensure they go as planned (Joint Publication 3-0, 2011). Thus, intelligence has played a key role in all the U.S military operations around the world since 1990.
