"I believe that America should not abolish the Columbus Day national holiday or any other alternative names or titles given to said national holiday. Columbus Day is a day in which shows representation of the Italian people and gives them a place in the United States of America and is not officially about the "discovery of America by Christopher Columbus" necessarily. Although the basic premise of the holiday and how Columbus expanded our horizons to these lands, it was originally for Italian representation. The basic concept of Columbus Day is taken out of its original context but although that does not mean that the entirety of the context is still good. The use of Columbus being represented for the Italians still hold many fallacious beliefs, some large misconceptions being that he discovered America and he disproved the "flat Earth" theory. My stance on this subject is that "Erasing history is not the answer" (Source 2) and I feel heavily about this because our culture regardless if we are Americans or not, comprise of the glories and downfalls of our ancestors and upbringings. No history is perfect, it would be hypocritical to blame Columbus for actions of slavery when Native Americans have done it to either their own or rival tribes as stated, "Slave trading was a major part of the economy of the Ute Native American tribes," (Source 3). To repeat what I stated, no history is perfect, and the history of Columbus Day is no different but no similarity, every history is unique and we must acknowledge every truth of the past and be proud of how far we have improved upon it. We must embrace the history of Columbus Day, both the good and the bad of it. Abolishing Columbus Day would help Native Americans to address and solve the issues and inequities within their communities. I believe this is so because as stated "Possibly. But only if the symbolic holiday is paired with meaningful policies and honest statements" (Source 2) that it would be a possibility. Although it may be a possibility, it is not advised and we, as a society, should instead confront this history and implement an unbiased conclusion from all this. The Native Americans may possibly benefit from such but not as much as acknowledging their pasts, cultures, heritage, and history. Enforcing policies and speaking out against the long-term after effects of these positives and negatives from the past will help aid and solve the inequities and issues of Native American culture."

Although I respect my colleague's opinion that Columbus Day should not be abolished, I disagree with the reasons presented to show the holiday's significance. Specifically, holidays are set to remind people of crucial things that happened in the past. If Columbus Day was established to represent Italians and recognize them in the United States of America (USA), it should not have been named after an explorer. Instead, the holiday should have been called Indigenous People Day or Explorers Day, depending on its objective. Besides, President Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed Columbus Day in 1934 to recognize Columbus' achievements and not that of Italian Americans.
I agree with my peer that there exist numerous misconceptions and fallacious beliefs about Columbus. The individual made significant contributions to American history. However, he also spearheaded other ...
