The urology department provides diagnosis and treatment services for genitourinary and adrenal gland illnesses in patients with different demographics. The common diseases seen in the urology department include urinary tract infections (UTIs) and urinary stone disease. The urinary stone disease, also referred to as the upper urinary tract calculi, constitute a common illness seen in the department. There is an increased prevalence of urinary stone disease in women across the United States (US) (Ward et al., 2019). Accordingly, research indicates that 40% of women in the US develop some type of UTI at a given point in their lifetime, making it a significant healthcare problem facing women (Bono & Reygaert, 2021). Other diseases managed in the department include bladder control problems and prostate cancer.
The main procedures relevant to the urology department include surgical, imaging, as well as prescription drug therapies. The commonly used surgical procedures for stone removal are minimally invasive methods, including shock wave lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, and ureteroscopy.
