Hospitality relates being friendly, welcoming and generous reception of visitors, guests and even strangers (Oxford English Dictionary). The concept was first used in the late Middle English and from Old French hospitalite, from Latin hospitalitas and from hospitalis ‘hospitable’ (Oxford English Dictionary). The French version mostly relates to receiving guests and the Latin version is entertaining people. Uses of these words reflect the idea of welcoming one with open hands and who is willing to make others comfortable.
The idea of entertainment in hospitality reflects that outsiders were welcomed, and this was like an obligation, and where possible the host and visors could exchange gifts to strengthen bonds. There are both hosts and visitors who interact and relationship that are fostered as there is focus on maintaining the safety and well-being of the guests. Host-friendliness is common even now in societies that value hospitality. Hospitality is a genuine way to show love for others and treating them equally with open arms, and is consistent with God’s commandment to love God and others. Those who are hospitable do not have pride and this is extolled in the bible in Judge Chapter 19 a Levite took a concubine as a wife, but she became adulterous, but they later reconciled and the wife’s father invited his son-n-law with open arms. “On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the woman’s father said to his son-in-law, “Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go” (Judge 19:5). In the New Testament there is focus on friendship, which is a similar concept to hospitality. Friendship is a good source of healing, joy, and encouragement. Luke chapter 11 Jesus taught his disciples to pray and extols them to welcome and help their friends in whatever way they could.

Current dictionary Hospitality is friendly treatment and reception of guests and extends to the business activities of providing services in hotels, bars and restaurants as well as other locations where guests visit. The hospitality industry is a broad market that meets the customers’ needs and the friendliest tend to attract many customers and clients.

While the Hebrew Scriptures do not contain a word for hospitality, the activity is mentioned mostly in the book of Judges. Hospitality [Gk philoxenia (υιλοξενια)] is “the practice of receiving a guest or stranger graciously was common to many social groups throughout the period in which the OT and NT were compose” (Freedman, 1992). The primary meaning of ‘āhab in the OT is to love God and human beings, and in many contexts the Hebrew term means “being a friend” and “showing friendship” in the OT.
