Research methods relate to the purpose of a project design, which can be broadly categorized as descriptive, exploratory, or comparative (See PICO Algorithm). Descriptive studies are used to “describe” a phenomena qualitatively (narrative) or quantitatively (numbers). Exploratory studies “explore” variables and explain the strength and/or predictive nature of the relationships between variables.  Comparative studies “compare” groups to determine if there are differences in a dependent (e.g. outcome) variable between groups that have been exposed or not exposed to an independent (e.g. intervention) variable. Describe the topic you would like to study for your Capstone Project and relate the purpose to one of these three project design categories.  Provide a justification for using the type of project design you selected.  

Many students will be conducting interventional studies to test a program, treatment, or guideline designed to improve the quality of nursing practice.  These studies are considered comparative studies and may be nonexperimental or experimental.  The SQUIRE guidelines provide a framework for publishing interventional types of studies, which can also be helpful when writing your Capstone Project. The research design is a framework the guides the researcher, who has to search for unequivocal evidence that supports the problem (Sim & Wright, 2000). Exploratory studies explore the relationship between two or more variables, and hence the correlational and predictive designs are most suitable for the research study. The studies outcome depends on the research design that has been chosen. There is growing interest in the relationship between education levels and patient care outcomes, and the correlation study design will help determine whether nursing education levels affect the quality of care. Correlation does not imply cause and effect relationships, while experimental studies are conducted to establish whether is a relationships between variables.
Both hospital characteristics and the nurse education are considered to determine how they influence patient outcome. The patient safety indicators are considered to compare how patient outcomes differ depending on the level of education. It is expected that the more nurses are educated the more likely they are to rely on quality indicators to improve health care provision (Blegen, 2013). Additionally, nursing experience is considered in the study as nursing integration integrates theory with clinical practice. Patient outcome will focus on the overall health of the patients including mortality, rates of infections and risk of developing complications. As nurses acquire more education they are expected to be more competent in their nursing practice and making decisions.
Previous research indicates that as education increases, the rates of mortality decrease, and the correlation design then explores the link between education levels and patient outcomes (Blegen, 2013). As the researcher observes and collects data, they more they are likely to identify patterns of hospitalizations and patient health. The research design is effective to identifying the similarities, differences and patterns that support or disapprove the formulated hypotheses.
