Role modeling intervention is an essential tool in student nurse stimulation competency. The study that was carried out in the article involved exposing the nursing students to a role modeling intervention video that took 40 minutes. Researchers developed the expert practice video, and it depicts an actor who is an expert nurse responding to a simulated patient care scenario whose health condition appears to deteriorate. It was used as one of the teaching-learning intervention before the students would participate in a simulated response-to-rescue scenario.
As the students watched the video, the expected behaviors were reinforced verbally by one of the researchers as the nurse actor modeled the corresponding behaviors (Barbara, Barbara, & Timothy, 2013). The students were then given a scenario where the patient was a 75-year old man who was admitted to an acute care unit for the exacerbation of heart failure. Halfway, through the scenario, the patient experiences a common complication of heart failure, and his condition appears to deteriorate. The student nurses are then expected to act the role of a registered nurse who has been assigned to care for the patient in the scenario by the use of the patient safety standards.
