Stetler Model
When nurses have the knowledge, they can use it to justify their actions, particularly when taking care of their patients. As discussed in the "Ways of Knowing," it is evident that caregivers play significant roles in the diagnosis, treatment, and reducing the prevalence of a specific disease. For example, African Americans males with the age of 45 years and above in Lanham, Maryland, are at a higher risk of prostate cancer than any other demographic in the United States of America (USA). Moreover, this group of individuals has been identified to encounter a high incidence of mortality rates and aggressive cancers. This assignment aims to show how the Stetler model can be implemented to help reduce the prevalence of prostate cancer among African American men.
Stetler's model was introduced in the 1970s. Researchers examined six research findings at an individual practitioner level. They include decision making, preparation, validation, application and translation, comparative evaluation, and evaluation (Camargo et al., 2017). The Stetler model shows that nurses should prepare, validate, decide, translate, and evaluate things or procedures that the target population should do to engage in behavioral change for change to occur.
Stetler's model has five primary phases: preparation, validation, decision-making, application, and evaluation. The preparation involves identifying the priority and developing an evidence-based practice (EBP) to fulfill the set obligations (Stetler, 2001). Validation entails assessing the sources of evidence and quality. In other words, it involves determining whether sources have merits or goodness. If the sources do not align with the project's goals, nurses should reject them. In the decision-making or comparative evaluation, findings are summarized logically. The differences and similarities are evaluated, and the findings are determined whether they are feasible or not. The application phase involves implementing the findings and identifying the implications to justify the change (Schaffer, Sandau, & Diedrick, 2012). For example, when it comes to African American men, they should be encouraged to undergo prostate cancer screening when they attain the age of 40 years. In that case, it will be possible to bolster change for males diagnosed with symptoms of prostate cancer. When prostate cancer is identified in its early stages, it becomes possible to eliminate or manage it. However, the failure of screening makes the disease advance and difficult to treat. After the implementation phase comes to the evaluation, the stage involves checking whether the project outcomes were met and if the goals ...
