Function of the thyroid gland
The thyroid is an endocrine gland in the neck and consists of the C cells and follicular cells. The thyroid gland produces and release thyroid hormones [T4] or thyroxine and [T3] or triyodethyronine, which are involved in growth and regulation of metabolism. The Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) controls production of thyroid hormones and the pituitary gland synthesizes the hormone. TSH stimulates the secretion of T4 and T3 and varies. The C cells affect the maintenance of calcium homeostatic. The secretion of calcitonin by C cells of the thyroid gland depends on the calcium levels in serum.
