In June 2016 the Macy foundation held a conference in Atlanta, Georgia on Registered Nurses: Partners in Transforming Primary care, proceedings of an earlier conference on Preparing Registered Nurses for Enhanced Roles in Primary Care. Thomas Bodenheimer, MD, MPH Diana Mason, Ph.D., RN, FAAN were the conference co-chairs (Bodenheimer & Mason, 2016). The conference comprised of leaders in primary care and nursing education to work together and propose recommendations for creating a balance in nursing education by encouraging registered nurses to become leaders in primary care teams as well as equipping them with the skills needed to improve primary care.
In the United States, primary care is facing challenges, and yet there are emerging opportunities. There is a growing gap between the capacity of primary care and the population’s need for it. Shortly, the number of retiring primary care physicians will be greater the number of primary care physicians joining the workforce. The range of responsibilities for a primary care physician is getting wider to allow for excellent acute, chronic and preventive care. There is an increased and widespread physician burnout. At the same time, there is a renewed push for transforming primary care practices all over the country, and both registered nurses and nurse practitioners, are in a position to contribute to improving primary care. Nurse practitioners will increasingly play a key role in primary care in the future. The number of registered nurses increased by over 300% between 2003 and 2015, with 83.4% certified in primary care. However, the ratio of primary care practitioners to the population will still decline. Therefore there will be a need for other professionals to care for the increasing number of adults suffering from chronic conditions, a task ideally suited for registered nurses.
