Organizational behavior is related to other key concepts such as organization theory, organizational development, and human resource management. These concepts, in one way or another, are significant in understanding the operations of healthcare organizations. While these concepts relate to how organizations operate, it is important to understand how they differ from one another.
Organizational Behavior
Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of the interaction of complex factors related to individuals and groups in the organizational setting (Borkowski & Meese, 2021). Although it is primarily identified with psychology, the field of OB also emerged from other disciplines, such as economics, sociology, and political science (Heath & Sitkin, 2001). As highlighted by Borkowski and Meese (2021), OB seeks to understand the dynamics surrounding the behavior of people in an organizational setting. In addition, OB aims to examine the situations that influence people's behavior change in organizations. With this understanding, managers in organizations can predict how factors within and outside the organization influence the behavior of organizational members.
Organizational Theory
Organization theory (OT) is another key concept related to organizational behavior, and as informed by Borkowski and Meese (2021), it focuses on the nature and behavior of organizations in their surroundings. Therefore, in contrast to OB, which focuses on groups and individuals in the organizational setting, OT tends to focus on the organization as a whole. In essence, OT examines the issues of the structure and design of organizations (Borkowski & Meese, 2021). The operations of healthcare organizations, just like other organizations in the business arena, require certain structures for effective functioning. For example, a healthcare organization requires key departments such as surgery, administration, and outpatients for effective functioning. These departments have to be arranged in a particular way to help attain organizational goals. In essence, OT is concerned with the patterns of formal relationships and duties and how they are coordinated in the organization.
Organizational Development
Organizational development (OD) is quite a relevant concept in health care, given the many changes the sector has undergone in the recent past. As Borkowski and Meese (2021) pointed out, OD seeks to understand the interaction between the need for change and the reaction of employees to change.
