Leadership can be defined as a process of influencing others socially in which efforts are maximized in achieving a certain goal. The word “leadership” connotes several meanings and images. A leader can be manifested as a political person who is after a passionate cause. It can be a person on top of an organizational hierarchy developing a strategy for the company while serving as a role model for its members to follow. Whatever the circumstance may be, a leader is someone who helps themselves as well as others to finish a particular task or achieve a certain goal most effectively. Leaders often set a vision and guide its members in this direction. Leadership requires a lot of things to be effectively efficient. It entails good character, camaraderie, selflessness, devotion, etc. If one aims to become a true leader, self-evaluation is likely to be the first step. We differ from our strengths and weaknesses. Thus, finding out what and where we are good and its contrary is one way of identifying what kind of leaders we shall be (Sfantou, et al, 2017).
A leader serves as a role model who motivates and inspires his followers towards the direction of its vision. Thus, leadership is important in establishing organizational goals and making decisions as well as ensuring the individual growth of its members. Most leadership styles involve a code of conduct, ethics, values, and norms, and beliefs. A leader should possess traits such as intelligence and charismatic personality to connect effectively with his followers. In the field of nursing, being a nurse leader is crucial. Possessing powerful leadership skills is important whether in providing direct care to the patient or in managing the nursing organization to drive motivation for the team, performance, as well as job satisfaction. A nurse leader should have a strong understanding and foundation of his/her leadership style (Sfantou, et al, 2017).
Leaders vary in kind since individuals also vary in personality. We all have roles in which we are the best to portray. Being the head of a group does not mean power and superiority; this is the common misconception which usually becomes the root of all ill-willed people. Being a nurse leader means having ears that listen, brains that comprehend, hands that willingly help, eyes that do not get blinded by money, and a mouth that speaks the truth with compassion. The common good must be the priority and the field we get to decide should be beneficial and helpful to the people – neglecting each societal status. This is the focus of my leadership style. My leadership style in nursing management is grounded in the understanding of how important both nursing staff and patients in acting and uniting as a team (Cummings, et al, 2018).
As a nurse leader, it is important to have the self-awareness to be able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. Knowing my strength can serve as a challenge for me in learning and applying new skills and improve myself through practice. By being aware of my strength, I can use the skills that I’m good at in benefiting our whole nursing organization and inspire the nursing staff to follow my example. These stre...
