If I cannot obtain a power of attorney, I will be unable to perform the endoscopy because I do not have informed consent. However, I can take some steps. The first step I would take is to consider legal family or guardians. When a power of attorney is missing, the patient's family can consent based on the patient's best interest (Darr, 2011). The other step is continuing with the endoscopy if I believe it is in the patient's best interest. Even if I do not get a power of attorney, if I realize the patient may be in danger if they do not get the procedure, I can proceed without a power of attorney.
