HIPAA did describe its regulations on contingency planning in March 2018. In the process, they urged healthcare organizations to layout plans for emergencies. These plans would ensure organizations get back to normalcy within the shortest time possible after a disaster (HIPAA Journal, 2018). Therefore, a contingency plan is developed to guide organizations on what steps to take and in what order in times of emergency. These plans should address all types of emergencies, such as fires, natural disasters, cyberattacks, vandalism, ransomware incidents, and system failures (Martínez, 2011). The approaches taken to deal with these disasters tend to vary. Developing a contingency plan is a requirement under the HIPAA Security Rule Contingency Planning and should not be regarded as just a best practice. This should be an ongoing process with organizations testing its efficiency with the use of drills and continually revising the plan if need be. 
Business continuity and disaster recovery plans are procedures undertaken by organizations to deal with different disasters with different measures. These two processes are different in that disaster recovery refers to the process of returning to business after a disaster, while business continuity means being able to sustain the business during the disaster. Business continuity planning demands a more comprehensive approach that will ensure the organization is profitable in the event of a disaster and after the disaster. On the other hand, disaster recovery requires a more concentrated approach where the organization has to develop plans on how to run businesses as usual after a disaster has struck.
