Understanding the importance of the role of the nursing profession in the provision of care is essential for its advancement. This is because it helps create a holistic approach towards bettering the healthcare system with the consideration of a holistic approach from the grassroots. Accordingly, the importance of this holistic approach could be seen in some of Shalala et al.'s (2011) recommendations about the improvement of the nursing practice, specifically that (1) "Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States" and (2) "Effective workforce planning and policymaking require better data collection and an improved information infrastructure."
