NUR703 Assignment 4: Opinion Editorial
 An opinion editorial (Op/Ed) is derived from the fact that these essays appear in the section of a newspaper reserved for Opinion pieces. Outsiders, that is, people not employed by the newspaper, generally write opinion pieces. These can be local experts in a subject area, a local reader---civic or political, or a syndicated columnist. Keep in mind these are the personal opinions of the writer. 
Tips for writing an Opinion Editorial:
These tips and pointers were provided by several national media contacts, including John Timpane, commentary page editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Andy Mollison of Cox News Service. 
The nature of an opinion/editorial piece requires that it argue something: that something is or is not so, is or is not worthy, somebody should or should not do something. If you are not arguing any of the above, an op/ed can also predict the outcome of certain events: what will occur if a political figure does or does not take action on an issue, etc. 
Op/eds MUST have a thesis. This sentence is what will be pitched to an editor to convince them to print your article. If it does not have a thesis, there is no main idea to pitch to the editor. 
Op/eds are traditionally between 700 and 800 words, but most editors say that the shorter the piece is, the better. With space at a premium in all national publications, a shorter piece is much more likely to run. 
Try to construct a short, compelling introductory sentence. The lead-in should encapsulate the idea of the piece and instantly engage the reader. Most editors judge introductions by this rule of thumb: the piece has less than 23 seconds to interest the reader. If your first paragraph does not grab them, they will not stick around long enough to finish reading the article. 
A good op/ed will offer proof that supports the opinion of the author. Proof can be introduced in the form of statistics (with a webpage or other resource where they can be checked), expert testimony (with the book and page number where they can be found), or personal experience. Do not be afraid to let your personality show in your article. Remember that your piece is not just words on a page; people will read the article if they feel they are hearing from a real person they can identify with. Come up with a good last line. Come to some sort of conclusion, even if the conclusion is that the outcome of an issue will be uncertain.

The “H.R. 721: Mental Health Services for Students Act of 2021” is one of the bills proposed in 2021 aimed at expanding and improving access to comprehensive mental programs in schools. This initiative targets school-going children, where the Public Health Service Act would be amended to improve mental health care. The bill is part of the Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education) to promote better access to mental health care services (GovTrack, 2021). Mental health care targeting veterans have received more attention, but we may also be neglecting mental care in children and young adults.
The World Health Organization (WHO) promotes school mental health interventions as one way to address mental health problems in the child and adolescent population. There have been various national and local initiatives and programs that modify risky development and decrease the presence of psychiatric symptoms. The school as a priority context for action and programs tend to focus on improved the students’ emotional well-being, improving academic performance, and school coexistence. In the long-term, the aim is to improve the quality of life and prevent worsening mental health, associated violent behavior, depression, and substance abuse. Thus, adopting H.R. 721 in its entirety or parts of the bill with modifications will strengthen mental health interventions from an early age.
Mental Health Policy seeks to promote mental health for individuals, families, and communities. Promoting psychological well-being protects them from worsening mental health while young and in their adult life. Depression is one the most frequent disorder in adolescents and young adults, while there are other mental health issues that remain undiagnosed. Promotion knowledge on mental health, which in turn, helps to improve healthy lifestyles, mental health care among the youth, and promoting stronger social ties will be promoted. The state and local governments would help to promote healthy ways, lifestyles, mental health, prevention of mental health problems, mental disorders, and substance abuse among adolescents and young people.
Interventions are also necessary to prevent mental problems and violence, through empowering the stakeholders to strengthen and to promote the early detection of risks of violence, mental problems and disorders, risk of suicide, and crisis intervention.
