Healthcare Policies, Advocacies, and Transformational Leadership in Nursing Profession

1.Explanation of how healthcare policy can impact the advanced practice nurse profession.
The different scopes of practices; full, reduced and restricted; has both negative and positive effects on the advanced practice nurse profession. NPs who are in full practice states with prescription authority were more likely to have their skills fully utilized, able to bill independently, have a better relationship with physicians and feel more independent in their advanced practice nurse role (Park et al., 2018). Those who are in restricted or reduced practice authority has to either consult with a physician or refer them which can lead to increase wait times for patients, delay treatment, and increase health cost due to frequent hospital visits. The different practices also affects patients in undeserved areas such as rural communities. Physician are more likely to treat patients in urban communities, which is unfortunate for NPs that require physician's supervision in rural communities (Park et al., 2018). Other healthcare policies that affect advanced practice nurses is that some of NPs cannot report that they have their own patient panels or bill their own patients despite if they are in an independent practice. They also do not have hospital admitting privilege's which can create challenges in the patient trying to receive follow-up care (Park et al., 2018).
2.Explanation of why advocacy is considered an essential component of the advance practice nurse's role.
Advocacy can be seen healthcare professionals collaborating together to assure patient has the availability of high quality person centered care (Kalaitzidis & Jewell, 2020). As a future behavioral health NP, advocacy includes health promotion activities that address mental health but providing resources that can help assist with the contributing factors of mental health and recovery (Kirmayer et al., 2018). Within this field the scope of advocacy includes: working with different agencies, supporting groups that address the causes of illness, and educating and informing the public. Most practitioners do not have all these skills, and that is why advocacy is a collaborative effort in order to promote positive change throughout clinical care (Kirmayer et al., 2018).
3.Discuss the four pillars of transformational leadership and the effect they may have on influencing policy change.
Transformational leadership is a leadership style that is used to motivate and inspire followers to inspire goals through the transformation of their own beliefs, behaviors and values (Giddens, 2018). Four components of transformational leadership is: idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individual consideration (Giddens, 2018). Idealized influence is building the confidence, trust and optimism among followers. The leader articulates high expectations for the organization and displays commitment to the vision. Inspirational motivation articulate a clear vision for the organization, that makes it easy for followers to understand and support. Intellectual stimulation, encourages people within the organization to question and look at previous problems in different ways. Lastly individual consideration, focuses on individuals' needs and differences. Skills are used in order to make a supportive successful environment (Giddens, 2018). The effect of transformational leadership on influencing policy change could be beneficial. This leadership is used to lead organizations through successful change and also where change is needed and desired. NPs who are against policies who restrict the care they can provide and decreases their autonomy would be engaged to follow a leadership that shows positive outcomes of making changes. This leadership shows positive outcomes in individual, teams, and organizations performance (Giddens, 2018).
