The registered nurse’s core mandate is the provision of quality healthcare to patients in whichever setting they are operating from. The American Nurses Association defines the advocacy role of the registered nurse as preserving human dignity, preserving patient equality and promoting freedom from suffering (Gerber, 2018). Nurses preserve the dignity of both patients and their loved ones by navigating confusing situations calmly while providing the requisite information and advice to calm situations and defuse tension.
