My specialty area being in nurse executive, one of the key areas of concern is low staff retention. The nursing field is already experiencing a nursing shortage and organizations need to improve their retention rates. Nursing staff retention falls under the purview of a nurse executive and it affects the healthcare system at different levels. The micro-level components involve day-to-day practice (Smith, McNeil, Mitchell, Boyle, & Ries, 2019). Nurses are a crucial element of the healthcare system and low nurse retention affects the day-to-day delivery of care. When nurse retention is low, this increases stress and burnout among nurses and consequently, their ability to perform their role. The meso-level component focuses on the local community and organizational aspects (Smith, McNeil, Mitchell, Boyle, & Ries, 2019). Low staffing levels cause nursing workload to increase, thus affecting the delivery of care. The macro-level components of the healthcare system include the legal, regulatory, and economic conditions that are beyond organizational or individual influence.
