Social Contact Paradigm in ASCs
Ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) offer patients with the most convenient places for conducting safely surgeries and procedures outside the hospital setups for more than ten years. Such ASCs have improved quality and consumer service under minimal costs amidst high costs incurred in other health facilities. Therefore, a current focus on the broader care continuum outside healthcare hospitals has been of greater achievement. Such services have been done based on social contact paradigm which has enabled the community hospitals to provide ambulatory services based on their own core values and missions. Thus, social contact paradigm has enabled most of the community-based ambulatory care units to offer services that target the society through their delivery channels, offering high efficient and focused services, have convenient locations for patients, integrate all the required continuum of care and align with physicians beyond the boundaries of economics.
Advantages and disadvantages of social contact paradigm
Social contact paradigms in ASCs have enabled community hospitals to have a leadership role as well as ensuring that such hospitals have an effectively organized ambulatory continuum. Thus communities have benefited in terms of reduced costs, increased quality of services and timely of services offered to the communities. Such advantages have been achieved since the community hospitals have abandoned the joint ventures with physicians to maintain the volumes as well as competing with physician-invested ambulatory services which have made them ineffective since such strategies were driven by revenues, efficiency, and profits (Ambulatory Surgery Center Association, 2013).
The shift of outpatient care and the increased demands of ambulatory care at the community level have led to improved accessibility, a full range of services, multispecialty, predictability, efficiency and cost reductions. These advantages have been hastened due to the social contact paradigm which has made these setups to be a destination for ambulatory care. Most community-based hospitals have been established in areas that have been difficult to access (Lovrien, et, al.2011). In addition, there has been a full range of services where patients have single one stop which enhances convenience for diagnosis and scheduling, testing among other services (Steinman, Gonzales, Linder & Landefeld, 2...
