What sorts of issues are most pressing in this case study?
The life of a young boy is on the line, and the decisions made by his parents have so far had a negative impact on his life. His parent’s hypocrisy about the proposed treatment procedures has escalated the issue, and now his condition has worsened. First, the parents were hypocritical to take him to the hospital over a throat infection, but when he was diagnosed with a bigger issue, they opted for prayers. A throat infection is far less dangerous than impending kidney failure, and for that they welcome treatment, but when the condition worsens, they prefer prayers rather than taking prompt action to save James’ life.
Secondly, when the parents return to the hospital two days later, they agree to have James put on dialysis which they had earlier rejected. It is apparent that they do not have the ‘faith’ required to heal their son. They are using James as the guinea pig of their faith rather than making logical decisions that are in the best interest of their child.
Should the physician allow Mike to continue making decisions that seem to him to be irrational and harmful to James?
Yes. The physician has to allow Mike to continue making his decisions because he has to observe a fundamental ethical principle of his work, autonomy. James is not old enough to make informed decisions about his health. His legal health representatives are his parents, and he must respect their choices. Legally, the physician cannot treat James without the consent of the parents and hence he must respect their choice since he does not agree with them. The physician has played his part to give expert advice on the matter and then the parents have to make their decisions.
According to the Christian narrative and the discussion of the issues of treatment refusal, patient autonomy, and organ donation in the topic readings, how might one analyze this case?
This case highlights the dangers of medical autonomy, especially in the case where the legal, health representative is ignorant and ill-informed. Parents who continue to endanger the lives of their children because of their beliefs which cannot be substantiated scientifically. In such cases, there should be legislation which has to protect the interests of the patients when there is sufficient evidence to prove their decisions are not in the best interest of the patient. In such a case, the physician can take necessary steps to bring on-board a balancing voice on such issues and ensure patients are not denied healthcare by their legal health representatives who can potentially endanger their lives if left unchecked.
