Differences between Paradigms, Grand Theories, and Middle Range Theories
Paradigms are bodies of ideologies that deal with the first principles of the world (Makombe, 2017). They can be symbolized as a set of glasses through which one views the world. They provide a framework from which the bearer of the paradigm views the nature of their world, interconnecting relationships of the world with its components, their contrast, and the influence of the human experience in their world. Paradigms are not rigid; they are basic and accepted based on faith. This advantage is that they can act as roadmaps in helping resolve and produce research problems (Makombe, 2017). Due to their laxity, it is common for people to change and uphold other paradigms that best suit their needs hence the term paradigm shift.
Grand Theories, also known as Conceptual Frameworks, are maxims on ideas containing conceptual elements, typically regarded as theoretical and not based on empirical evidence. The ideas are born in the mind of a theorist, and their growth can be promoted by discussions (Rizk & Elragal, 2020). Unlike the Middle Range Theories, they are unbounded to a subject, meaning they encompass all ideas. Despite Grand Theories being primarily a means of establishing legitimacy, they do not require data, and their differentiation is facilitated through philosophy (Rizk & Elragal, 2020). They have a low falsifiability score which makes them pass most tests.
