Cultural competency involves effective collaboration with people from varying cultures to improve healthcare delivery, experiences, and patient outcomes. This paper discusses potential strategies to minimize cultural bias and dissonance and how community health nurses recognize and address implicit bias, stereotypes, and bias to enhance culturally competent healthcare and promotion activities.
Community health nurses can recognize bias, stereotypes, and implicit bias by conducting assessments like Implicit Association Test. The test identifies unconscious and uncontrollable biases and stereotypes (FitzGerald & Hurst, 2017). In addition, the nurses can fill out self-report or reflection questionnaires to recognize biases and stereotypes. Nair and Adetayo (2019) highlighted that cultural competency training and education help nurses identify stereotypes and biases in the community.
