Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept:
The selected nursing concept is resilience. Resilience refers to the dynamic ability to maintain a positive outlook despite the challenges one is facing (Manomenidis et al., 2019). The nursing role has several stressors that may predispose a nurse to such challenges as burnout and trauma. The ability to maintain the appropriate positive mindset and outlook during and after these challenging occurrences exemplifies the concept of resilience.
Three defining attributes:
One of the defining attributes of resilience is adaptability. This attribute relates to the ability to make appropriate changes to be accustomed to different environments. A nurse who is adaptable has the ability to get accustomed to various work environments and challenges efficiently. The second attribute is coping skills. Whenever faced with challenging situations, a person with coping skills looks for a way to navigate the challenge (Sala et al., 2019). This ability to cope effectively when faced with adversity and challenges is an essential ingredient for resilience. The third attribute is a positive outlook. Psychological science has revealed that the mind of a human is powerful. If trained to have a positive outlook toward life, then one is likely to find a way to maintain hope and optimism even in the middle of adversity. Having a positive outlook toward life helps the nurse to always find a reason to hope and to be optimistic (Sala et al., 2019). This ability to maintain a positive outlook immensely contributes to resilience.
1 Antecedent and 1 Consequence of the concept:
One antecedence to resilience is trauma. There are many factors that may predispose a nurse to trauma. Some of these factors include when a patient dies while in the care of the nurse, dealing with patients who have complex medical situations and being treated unfairly by patients or their caregivers. For instance, nurses may be physically or verbally abused by patients or caregivers. These factors predispose a nurse to trauma. As identified above, trauma is an antecedent to resilience.
