The Agency and why it was selected
Beginning November 1, 2020, through April 2021, many Americans will experience the biting cold of winter. The City of Alexandria, Virginia, is renowned for its community and human services. Stakeholders envision a community where residents experience a sense of well-being, self-sufficiency, and safety. Notably, the city is committed to providing effective and essential services to improve the Alexandrians' quality of life.
The city operates a shelter, Lee Center Winter Homeless Shelter, located at the Lee Center during winter. The purpose will be to serve those experiencing homelessness during the cold months that will likely end in April. Temperatures are expected to hit the low of 41 degrees and this center shall serve the city's most vulnerable population and will help locals with no homes throughout winter.
Brief history and mission of the Lee Homeless Shelter
Lee Center is a recreational park that serves residents of Alexandria. However, it will be temporarily used to serve the homeless during the difficult winter period. The mission is to provide support and care for them to experience a sense of well-being, self-sufficiency, and safety (Miles, 2020). Notably, the city’s winter shelter will be two locations that will open between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. daily regardless of the preexisting weather conditions.
