Different advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) perform different roles. This paper will examine the certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) role and the certified nurse-midwife (CNM) with a special focus on the ethical guidelines that govern these roles.
While each role is different, all APRN roles are primarily governed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics. According to Haddad and Geiger (2020), the ANA Code of Ethics has been revised severally to accommodate changes in the nursing practice and the most recent one accommodates the APRN roles. As a result, the current version of the Code of Ethics takes into account societal changes, advances in technology, as well as the expansion of practice into health policy, education, research, advanced roles, and administration (Haddad & Geiger, 2020). The provisions of the ANA Code of Ethics guide everyone in the nursing profession and require them to practice with compassion, commit to the patient, advocate and protect the rights of the patient, remain accountable to the nursing practice, and provide care to self. Also, they must maintain professional integrity, collaborate with other healthcare professionals to promote health, advance the profession through research, and create and maintain an ethical environment (Haddad & Geiger, 2020).
