Background of the Study
The study by Aiken, Sloane, Bruyneel, Heede, and Sermeus (2012) addressed the issue of nurses' working conditions and the quality of care in hospitals in Europe. Issues such as high workload and burnout among nurses have been addressed before, but this study focused more on understanding how skill mix and staffing levels among nurses can be used to optimize the quality of care in hospitals and address the issue of nurse shortage. According to the authors, understanding the factors that lead to lack of satisfaction among nurses can reduce the number of nurses willing to leave their jobs, which can help solve the shortage of nurses and thus improve healthcare quality. Studies such as Aiken et al. (2012) and Kutney-Lee et al. (2009) were used to inform the background of the study.
The authors indicated that different nursing workforce elements affect the costs of health care, quality of health care and the safety of patients. As such, the significance of the study was on strategies that can be used to ensure nursing resources are efficiently utilized to avoid depletion of the quality of care, especially when there is pressure to reduce the costs involved in the provision of healthcare (Aiken, Sloane, Bruyneel, Heede, & Sermeus, 2012).

The research questions and purpose of the study were in line with the identified problem because they focused on addressing working environment issues that resulted in nursing dissatisfaction and the consequent shortage of nurses, which ultimately affects the quality of care in hospitals.
Methods of the Study
The study adopted a cross-sectional survey as part of RN4CAST study of nurses and general acute care patients in hospitals. Data for this study was obtained from professional nurses in hospitals in 12 countries in Europe. All nurses who provided direct care to patients in the sampled hospitals were included in the study (Aiken, Sloane, Bruyneel, Heede, & Sermeus, 2012). The information provided in the study was obtained from single item questions in the nurses' survey such as the one asking nurses to rate their working conditions as poor, fair, good or excellent so as to assess the work environment. This method of data collection was deemed appropriate by the researchers because it provided a sample that effectively represented all the nurses and acute care hospitals in all the 12 countries (Aiken, Sloane, Bruyneel, Heede, & Sermeus, 2012).
