The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a US public health policy signed by President Obama on March 23, 2010, and became a law on January 1, 2014 (Shaw et al., 2014). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) offers a legal framework that guides the US healthcare system. ACA's central role is to increase health insurance coverage to about 94 percent of the American population (Williams, 2015). The Act aimed to increase Medicaid beneficiaries by approximately 15 million people, leaving only 24 million individuals without insurance coverage.
