Social/Emotional Needs of Gifted Students
Gifted students are a special group that needs close attention from teachers and the administration. This group demonstrates a greater maturity over others in some domains and may be subject to emotional and social stress (National Association for Gifted Children, n.d). Elementary, middle, and high school administration and counselors are obligated to work with teachers to better address these students' social/emotional needs.
The administration, counselors, and teachers can collaborate to create and provide a school counseling program to all students through team teaching, direct instructions, and providing lesson plans for units and learning activities in classrooms that target social/emotional development (American School Counsellor Association, 2017; Murdock-Smith, 2013). These programs are crucial in addressing the social and emotional needs of the students by providing the right atmosphere for development.
