The Impact of Imprisonment on Mothers and their Children
The imprisonment of a parent generally affects children mentally, socially, and overall well-being. Children of incarcerated parents suffer anxiety and depression; they develop fear when they cannot see their parents. They become antisocial and depressed. However, the impact of incarceration on these children varies when a mother is incarcerated compared to their father. A study conducted by Dallaire (2007) found out that incarcerated mothers had their adult children also incarcerated at a rate of more than twice that of incarcerated fathers. Moreover, mothers who repeatedly abuse drugs were a more significant predictor of their children's incarceration than fathers (Dallaire, 2007). This shows that a steady relationship exists between a mother's incarceration and that of a child. The study also reported that incarcerated mothers faced greater familial confinement; furthermore, their minor kids are more likely to find themselves in foster homes than incarcerated fathers (Dallaire, 2007). When a mother is imprisoned, it affects a child more than when a father is imprisoned since mothers play a vital role in their children's life.
Based on the readings, when a mother is incarcerated, a child can easily choose to give up on life and school. They view their mothers as reasons for living. In chapter 3 of the book "parental incarceration and the family," Allison was an active girl in school participating in sports activities and performing well to the extent of getting a scholarship, however after her mother's incarceration, she gave up and started doing drugs and lost track of life (Arditti, 2014). This type of maternal absence affects a child in that they lack the mother's love and inspiration that usually keeps them going with life. As an educator, I can assist by helping the parent re-establish his relationship with their children by getting them into a program that helps them bond.
