Question #1: Name or identify the strategies used in the YouTube video to support language and literacy
In IrvineNatureCenter (2015), drawing, reading a book to children, and play are the main strategies used to support literacy and language. Although drawing is undertaken by the children independently, play and book-reading in the video occur in groups. The way children make meaning and record their worlds through drawings is an important step in developing writing and literacy. Play encourages a child to talk, which is significant in helping children express themselves. On the other hand, reading a book to attentive children promotes emotions, imagination, and language skills.
Question #2: As a teacher, share something you do to support language and literacy and connection to the outdoor classroom?
Children's games, such as building blocks and movement games, have learning elements in them. As a result, I often engage my students in dramatic plays using a variety of objects and props as a means of supporting literacy and language. Objects and props assist children in remembering and maintaining what their roles are all about. For instance, in a grocery store game, statements such as "We're playing grocery store, and I'm the checker because I have an apron on" are common among the children. Children's games are generally referred to as imagination without limits. As a result, it is easier for children to connect indoor games with the outside environment. In the grocery store game, the child playing as the checker may require the other children to get leaves from the outside environment and use them as grocery.
Question #3: How can we ensure that language and literacy flourish in meaningful ways?
We can ensure that language and literacy flourish in meaningful ways by combining indoor learning tools with outdoor learning tools. Combining indoor and outdoor activities is a form of in-depth study that encourages authentic conversation and vocabulary development. In elementary grades, for example, children can look at the shapes of birds and insects in books while in class. During outdoor learning, those children can attempt to identify birds and insects using the pictures in the bo...
